Last week I watched that youtube concert from Paris and it was pretty much my Madonna Rock Bottom... I guess it had been coming on for years, as it does. I just couldn't bear that self-help 101 speech about 'pointing the finger at yourself'... she does it in every tour, I know I know, but I just couldn't believe my eyes. I crashed.
The weekend came and I decided to TRY and make a mix of songs I WANTED to hear from her. Not hits (neccessarily), not boom boom remixes, but b-sides, album cuts, pre-boom boom remixes, radio remixes... And you know what, I became somewhat obsessed with the it as a mixtape!
And why not share it???
I can't say it has me buying tickets to MDNA Tour (no thanks), but it did bring back some beautful Madonna memories that span my entire life - which is saying something. Hope it does the same for you!
Took some time off PopMuse, sorry boys and squirrels.
But wanted to come back to share a new mixtape. I do these every year to celebrate my anniversary to Bloghungry (who still posts like a maniac, if you are looking for delicious recipes).
I work on the "MAY" mixes all year, so you are going to hear some older tracks that were stashed away and saved for this mix.
These are concept mixes, where each song tells a little piece of a greater story. I labor over every track and the song order more than you should know.
There are some liner notes hiding in the mp3 notes, if you care.
It's about love and the amusement park that is a long term relationship.
Proud of us for holding it together this year sometimes with nothing more than a steak sandwich and a dream.
1. Superbass. I haven't stood in front of a TV and tried to learn music video choreo since my teens, something about this little bit of choreo kills me.
2. Musically this little break in Call Your Girlfriend is TOO exactly on my sweet spot to be believed. It's Brit's Piece Of Me break, times 10. Worship. The choreo is very ROBYN but works so well in this one take environ.
8 years ago today a producer met a pizza boy, they kissed and their lives were changed forever.
Every May I do a mix to commemorate my love affair with Bloghungry. It's a journal entry mix, a bunch of songs that tell the story I want to tell at this moment in time, reflective of this time in our lives but also looking back, forwards, sideways... Oh, and this is not a Boom Boom compilation, there is dance music on here, but you're going to have to feel the slow build to get there, this is an Concerto in 3 Movements and song order and pacing is vital to the story.
Let's take a minute and appreciate Drop Out Orchestra'sremix ofRobyn's "Hang With Me" (my favorite track from Body Talk). This mix has been around a while, and thanks to @ifoxalotfor sending it to me originally. I've already had my fan worship moments for Drop Out Orchestra and this mix in particular on Twitter, but it came on again recently and inspired a strange and funny stream of consciousness email I sent to myself, cause I'm nuts and this is what I do when I'm in the cell phone lot at LAX playing disco music too loud at 8am...

Personal significance is a bit obvious, but I loved this track long before a family was on the brain. (I just love a churchy handclap what can I say.)
And speaking of family, lil miss Lily has been blowing my mind with the cuteness these days. I'm sure every parent feels like this, but damn she is adorbs. She was doing a little pose for the camera now click click last night in her new Hello Kitty Nightgown, see below. I think she was mimicking the girls on Drag Race actually, which is really the best place to learn how to be a woman isn't it?
sometimes i'll just turn on the camera in a moment in the car that seems unexpected or important to the day, kind of journaling with my iPhone. this is not safe, but it is comforting to know I can go back and watch later and remember the moment. here's two moments. the one above was on way home from work. one below was after picking up lily from daycare. both so filled with layered meaning for me.
An alien abducted my body one night back in October and when I returned to earth I had pieces of this mixtape on my computer. For months and months I worked on it, tried to make sense of it, put it away, then brought it back, added something, then put it away and on and on, until now. Finally I'm ready to release it back to the universe from which it came.
This is a "Mixtape", in the R&B / Hip-Hop definition not the Boom Boom smooth DJ Mix style. It's choppy, messy, raw, and nsfw. Shit I'm not sure it's safe for the world. It's not all R&B though, it's a club mix for sure, just jumping genres more than usual. It features some truly epic moments from 2010 and 1986 and everything in between. There are liner notes but they are on each mp3 in the INFO > COMMENTS field or you can read them below.
Oh yeah, forgot to tell you, it's a mix about Sex.
I'm sitting in my favorite coffee shop in LA, drinking wonderful coffee, waiting to get my haircut, and discovering that miraculously I have like 45 minutes where I won't have to be Liz Lemon or Michael Steadman, I can actually take a second to be PopMuse. Miss him.
I just d'loaded Pink's take on Whataya Want From Me and it is transcendent. The last time I had a real moment with this track was in a different coffee shop months and months ago with Lambert's version. I was hiding from a endlessly crying baby, an exhausted and frustrated husband, and a stretch of unemployment, that for a new dad and breadwinner had my stomach upside down. While drinking cup after cup of crap coffee and eating these vile egg patty sandwiches (no wonder I was stomach sick and that dump went out of business) and I melted into the lyrics of this track and felt better...
If you're wondering why I don't blog as much, it's because I'm hanging with this chick. This is my #itgetsbetter video.
This scene turned me out. The Real Housewives franchise entertains me endlessly, but there is some crap parenting going on with ALL the casts. Until Nene Leakes shows up, this is how it's done.
In 1987 I begged a sales person at Tower Records on Broadway (Downtown NYC one, remember that slice of record store heaven?) to give me a HUGE Faith Poster when they were done with the display, I was 13. I was so convincing (and probably so gay) the sales guy wrote my name and phone
number on the back of the poster and he did in fact call me when the
display came down and gave it to me. I was so excited. When I got home and hung it on my bedroom wall, it took over my entire room. Now that I think about it, my parents were so sweet to allow that.
Believe it or not I kept that poster all these years and just recently tossed it in a clutter panic. Time to make more room for Lily's keepsakes and let go of mine I thought. I'll never hang it up again and well, whatever, it was time.
If you had told me that GM would end up in jail 20 plus years later, I would have laughed. This is such a sad moment for him and his fans, drug addiction can get so ugly. Sony was also about to re-release Faith this month, but has canceled that.
Wonderfully though a Freemasons Dance Mix of I Want Your Sex has leaked and it's super hot. (tk will w.) Check it...
