I am very happy for Obama and proud that Americans cast the right Presidential Vote in this election. But my joy is tainted by the results of Prop 8 in CA (and 102 in AZ, and 2 in FL.) In Obama's Speech
last night he went down the list of minorities in America, and put Gays
and Lesbians right above the Disabled, there is truth in that list.
Americans (shit, Humans) have historically looked for someone to pit
their problems on, someone to blame, someone to exclude, someone to
hurt and someone to hate.
It's hard to imagine that something like Gays Marrying, expressing commitment to one another, could be that scary
to straight people. SO hard to imagine, that I think it's fair to
assume a vote for 'Yes on Prop 8' was a vote for 'Yes on I blame Gay
People' and 'Yes on I exclude Gay People.' Straight Californians
should be ashamed that they were open minded enough to
vote for an African American President, but not open-minded enough to
vote against bigotry towards Gay People.
I'm most shocked by LA County
(where I live and work). If you LA County voters think this town could
survive without Gays, you are out of your minds. If you think you
would have a job, a gentrified neighborhood, or a stitch of entertainment for your children without Gay People, you are out of your minds. (Holding back
insults... use your feeling words PopMuse, use your feeling words...)
I
guess my main question to all of you LA County Yes On 8 Voters (who said one thing in
your exit polling, to your co-workers, your gay friends and
family members, and then walked into that booth and essentially said -
YES, my marriage is more significant than yours is...) Why is your Ring more significant than mine? Why are
your values more significant than mine? Why is your family more
significant than mine? Why is your relationship with God more
significant than mine? Why is your love more significant than mine?
I am touched by how many people commented and emailed about my marriage to Bloghungry a few weeks back. Most touched by those that decided to give money to NO
or forwarded that Post to their family and friends as a tool to educate on this Proposition. We tried.
If you still have the money to give, I hope you will give it below, we are gonna need some great Lawyers to get us out of this mess!
