Big Business (1988)

Bigbiz Now that's is a movie entrance.  You learn everything you need to know about these characters in the first minute and half of screen time.  Film Making Bitches.

If you haven't watched Big Business since 1988, you must, it's completely brilliant.  Why don't they make movies like this anymore?  (Tina Fey I'm talking to you!)  And why was everything created in 1988 absolutely perfect?

Beyonce Demo: "Beautiful Nightmare"

Beyonce0 Here's the new leak from Beyonce, called "Beautiful Nightmare".  Apparently it's a demo from her new CD.  Who knows with these early leaks?  I had heard her new CD was gonna have a euro-dance slant produced by Freemasons.  So not sure how this hot mid-tempo fits, but I LOVE it.  It's super zexy.  Check it out...

The Darjeeling Limited - Not a good nap.

Darjeeling_limited_poster Doing that much Heroin, Indian Pain Killers and Cough Medicine, how do you get so much work done?  When I'm doing Heroin, Indian Pain Killers and Cough Medicine all I want to do is eat.  I joke.

I like Wes Anderson movies.  I like to take naps to them, no it's not a bad thing, it took me 8 tries to get through The Life Aquatic, I kept falling asleep, but in the end, loved the film, like I love his others.  But Darjeeling wasn't a good nap, (dead children distract from sleep) and wasn't an enjoyable watch either.  And ENOUGH with the daddy issues already.

But there are 3 things The Darjeeling Limited still has going for it:

1. Hotel Chevalier (Gorgeous Short Film/Prelude to TDL which is on the DVD and above.)

2.  That Wes Anderson Font (Futura Bold. if you're wondering).  Obsessed with the way he uses it... Timeless, perfect.

3. Randall Poster - his music supervisor.  Now I'd guess a hipster like Anderson probably has his own ideas about Music, but damn were those cues on point.  Love the way he uses lyrics to play off scenes.  Hard to do right.  But done so right especially with this track...

Vampire Weekend

PopMuse has decided to love Vampire Weekend.  I had earlier decided to hate them because the hype machine pushing them felt unwarranted and what I had heard from them sounded like Paul Simon's "Graceland" (now that is a moment I don't need to return to.)

Spin Then, in one day, I read their SPIN Cover Story and watched them perform on an SNL, and decided, it was time to love them.  Hype machine wins again.

But the real reason I've decided to love them is because I feel like John Hughes would love them.  And not because they look like characters out of Pretty In Pink, but because I feel like their sound is completely born out of his 80s film soundtracks.  Think about it.

Vamp1cd Also, I am completely obsessed with the Font and Design Layout of their CD Booklet.  What? It makes a difference.

Danity Kane "Damaged"

Popfection.  Go ahead and rip from Britney & Spice Girls, it's exactly what you should be doing Danity.  I love a 3 Set-Up music video cut on beat, it's like everything I need.  And man is this my color palette, I love a Bubble Gum aesthetic... Know me.

Also, this track has been turning me out lately.  Song of the season for sure.  Don't sleep on these girls 'cause you have an aversion to MTV and Making The Band, they've transcended with this song and video.

SXSW '08: Shows Last Night

Tmichael Last night was the first night I had no work (after 10:30) so I went out to see some shows.  I saw this nerd "Totally Michael" basically because I like his name and that he was Pop, there is just so much rock here I needed a break from Marshall Guitars.  Totally Michael was fun, I tried to shoot video for you, but he didn't let the venue turn the lights on in the Beauty Bar Tent (idiot, he might've ended up on TV) eh, kids.  He was OK though, good in a myspace novelty act kinda way.

Fm_belfast_fm_belfast_iceland_airwa Then I wanted to see FM Belfast, because I was on a young cute hipster theme.  They were playing a big show at Maggie May's but I missed it, so I went to see them in a tiny Bear Bar (only at SXSW), which was hilarious, cause it was like 20 people watching them.  But 15 of them were in freakin' heaven, so it was completely amazing.  FM Belfast are adorable, my fav song from the night is avail below, they started it by saying "This is a song about a synthesizer that broke."  It's called "Synthia".  Love.

Pjpj Then on the patio of this same bar I discovered Project Jenny, Project JanThey dressed well and had a few good songs, and were preforming full out even though there were like 12 people there, (which made them great.)  But I was really tired, so... I went home.

SXSW DISCOVERY: WHITLEY

Whit When I'm on a big shoot (for the day job) I generally like to wake earlier than everyone else on my production team to get the work done I can't once the questions, requests and complaints begin.  This morning was like the rest.  So I stumble into the hotel where my interview space is at the crack of dawn and there's a morning radio show set up to in the lobby.  Very SXSW.

This morning they were interviewing some little Australian singer songwriter, Whitley.  He launches into a cover of Bjork "Hyperballad".  And it was one of those transcendent moments.

Found him on Myspace.

Here's the recorded version, but the live version was like made for me at that very moment.  Dawn is a something you shouldn't sleep through.
