Junior Vasquez on Drugs and Sex
Superstar DJ Junior Vasquez just did the most amazing interview where he discusses HIV and his SERIOUS Crystal Meth habit. Here are some excerpts...
Vasquez knows about losing track all-too-well. The last half-decade at least is a blur. “People tell me stories, but I just don’t remember,” he admits sadly. “I was getting so banged up before going to work, the whole time at work. Then there was the aftermath at home, being secluded, getting out of shape and not eating.”
He refers to his days at New York City’s now-classic Twilo nightclub as his “crack years.” Around that time Vasquez says he “became so belligerent” about his drug usage, crystal meth went everywhere with him. “It would be all over the DJ booth, scattered all over the records,” he recalls, an element of disgust in his voice.
“I was so proud to be a meth-head, nobody was going to talk me out of it,” he relays. “That’s how you get until you hit a personal bottom.” For Vasquez that came in February 2005 in a Texas airport. During a meth-induced seizure, the DJ nearly bit through his tongue. At that point, he called it quits.

Junior Vasquez a speed queen? Uh, Duh! All you have to do is listen to that gawd awful music he spins. You can virtually track his demise into the drug culture by following the type of House he's played over the course of his career. I hope he's getting help.

I worked with Junior at the old Sound Factory, and glad to hear he's ok. God bless him. He created my fondest memories of that time, and would play my favorite dance track "Now That We Found Love" by Third World, every year on my birthday. Long live the king!!

As a straight male who is fervently interested in the dance music scene, I hope that Junior can put these things behind him. I have been a fan of Junior Vasquez since I very first heard a remix by him almost fifteen years ago. I've enjoyed his slammin' club remixes for much of my life. And, as someone who aspires to have the amount of success that Junior Vasquez has had in the dance music scene, I truly hope that he can put many of these issues to rest.
To address those who insult the talent and the credibility of his music, I can only laugh. You simply cannot reach a point in the music industry that Junior Vasquez has by merely making crap dance music. If such were the case, he may have bowed out gracefully. With that being said, in my view, Junior Vasquez has the most thorough catalog of quality dance music of many producers of the current scene. And, he has helped to smash the boundaries in so many genres of music to present some of the greatest dance floor anthems that one could hope to hear.
If you like house music and you do not admire the work of Junior Vasquez, you probably do not have a pulse. I give my best wishes to him in all of his future musical endeavors. And, I hope that he can put this behind him.
